Aftermath *AX 2009*

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 6, 2009, 9:30 AM

So, the 4 days (3 days I went) at AX was a blast! I got to see and meet some awesome artists that are here on DA. To mention a few, :iconkurot: :iconhakuku: and :iconjadedice: who I all bought stuff from.

I got to catch up a bit with close friends :iconraxion: and some who aren't on DA.

OMG! Definitely, gighlights of this years AX include getting to see Morning Musume and artist Yoshiro Nightow, Daisuke Ishiwatari, and Hiroyuki Imaishi. If you don't know Morning Musume, they're an all-female group who have reached worldwide success and who's music still tops the charts. That and they're so cute. Yoshiro Nightow is most famous for his manga "Trigun" but also several other works. Daisuke Ishiwatari created Guilty Gear and currently is working on BlazBlue. Hiroyuki Imaishi was art director for anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I was in awe of their presence since they are some of the influences on my art style and technique.

I took in every work of Yoshiro Nightow who at one point was commenting on the question "Art teachers often reject the manga style of art claiming that it is unoriginal and shouldn't be drawn. What is your say on how budding artists should take such criticism, etc" by saying, "Art is a passion to me and I fully understand that it is important to the growth of the artist to develop their own style and draw what they love." He further stated that if manga style art is enjoyable to the artist, he or she should continue to purse the style.

On another note, it was great to see so many cosplayers at the con. I took so many pictures... it's nice to see that the level of cosplay in the United States is rising... many people are taking anime cosplay here in the united states just as seriously as those that dress up as American grapic novel superheroes. The pride that cosplayers have toward their dress and the characters they represent is immense and I applaud all those that do so. Personally, I would join but the Air Force Academy isn't really the place to be making such costumes not to mention how much detail I put into proparts such as swords and weapons takes time to gather propper supplies. Yeah, its an excuse... I'll probably figure a way to do it next year. If only I had a group of people that I knew that would like to dress up as a group. Its always more fun if everyone puts in for "character interaction." Most of the guys that I've been going with have been too shy/lame to do it but I have at least one I'm pretty sure to pursuade but he likes dressing as individual characters.

They showed some really good anime at the con this year. Hellsing ultimate was awesome and the live-action Blood+: The Last Vampire is going to be "balls to the wall hella fuckin' awesome." I also loved ghost stories which is hilarious. Also, watching anime at a con is so different than watching it alone in your room. You can really feel the emotion and enjoyment of the crowd as it is channeled throughout the room. The witty comments are great too and its nice to see an emotional involvement with the media more than you would in some others because of the group's unified passion for it.>/p>

The workshops, other panels, and exhibit hall/artist alley were so awesome. I got to do so much and see new things such as video of the development of a 24 foot mech currently in production and hear what those involved in the industry are feeling about the future of anime/manga. I got to try Hichew (sp?) and those carbonated drinks with the marble built into the packaging. Funny quick story, I helped out the vendor fix his display on his computer for the booth and the manager and vendor were amazed that they gave me a free drink. I wasn't in it for anything except to help but it goes to tell you that helping other people out no matter what it is, is noticed by all. I bought quite a bit of stuff and will cherish them. Although my parents don't understand my attachment to anime/manga nor share my desire to watch the industry grow, I'll probably continue to enjoy it the rest of my life.

Peace!
